Equality statement

Union solidarity is based on the principle that union members are equal and deserve mutual respect at all levels. Any behaviour that creates conflict prevents us from working together to strengthen our union.

As unionists, mutual respect, cooperation and understanding are our goals. We should neither condone nor tolerate behaviour that undermines the dignity or self-esteem of any individual or creates an intimidating, hostile or offensive environment.

Discriminatory speech or conduct which is racist, sexist, transphobic or homophobic hurts and thereby divides us. So too, does discrimination on the basis of ability, age, class, religion, language and ethnic origin.

Sometimes discrimination takes the form of harassment. Harassment means using real or perceived power to abuse, devalue or humiliate. Harassment should not be treated as a joke. The uneasiness and resentment that it creates are not feelings that help us grow as a union.

Discrimination and harassment focus on characteristics that make us different; and they reduce our capacity to work together on shared concerns such as decent wages, safe working conditions, and justice in the workplace, society and in our union.

CUPE’s policies and practices must reflect our commitment to equality. Members, staff and elected officers must be mindful that all persons deserve dignity, equality and respect.

Presidents Message

On behalf of CUPE 3131, I’d like to welcome you to our new website.

As president of CUPE 3131, I have come to believe that our success will depend greatly upon our ability to engage our members, motivate them to become involved and ensure that they are well informed about Union activities and goals.

Every new member receives a ‘New Member’s Kit’ which contains essential information on how the Union functions.  Members can stay up to date by visiting this website often or by signing up to receive email updates.

The mission of Local 3131 is to improve the wages and working conditions for our members, and to promote and support equity, inclusivity and fair treatment in the workplace.

The Union works for you and our greatest strength is solidarity – standing together through both good and bad times.

3131 is here for you. If you have any questions or concerns, or if you wish to receive further information on the roles and responsibilities of your Union, please do not hesitate to contact me at allana_serroul@cupe3131.ca.

Thank you all and keep up the excellent work.

In Solidarity,

Allana Serroul
